Following her mother’s path, Cameron became an English major at Wesleyan University in Connecticut and later earned her MFA in Writing from Indiana University, where she also taught as a graduate instructor. Teaching came naturally to her. She spent years in the classroom, guiding students in poetry and writing at an arts high school and at Yale University. She also loved mentoring middle schoolers in Connecticut, helping them find confidence in their voices and stories.
After many rewarding years in education, Cameron realized she wanted to continue supporting young people, but in a more personal way. In 2012, after moving back to her hometown of Chicago, she began working one-on-one with students as an independent college counselor. Since then, she has helped hundreds of families across the U.S., as well as in China and Korea, find clarity and confidence in the college process.
Cameron often laughs that part of her motivation comes from her own messy college application experience. As a strong-willed seventeen-year-old, she refused advice from her parents and applied only to highly selective schools. When the results came in, she had one acceptance and one waitlist offer. Her family paid the deposit for Barnard, and she was ready to start her new life in New York when the unexpected happened, she got off the waitlist at Wesleyan that summer. She chose to attend Wesleyan instead, and the rest is history. That experience taught her how stressful and unpredictable the process can be, and it’s why she’s committed to making the journey smoother for every student she works with.
Today, Cameron lives in River Forest, Illinois, with her husband and their dog, Cookie. Her two adult daughters are building careers they love, one lives in Los Angeles, and the other works at the Field Museum in Chicago (and occasionally helps out at GES). Outside of her work with students, Cameron loves writing, reading, pickleball, and travel. She is also a songwriter who performs and records in the Chicagoland area.
Cameron believes every student has a story worth telling and a place where they truly belong. She can’t wait to help your family take the next step toward finding it.
